Sept 24th, 2021
It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing that Bread and Yoga Co-op will be closing its doors.
Since the pandemic hit, it has been very challenging to keep the business going as it has been especially devastating to the yoga and fitness studios around the city. Even studios that were able to maintain their spaces through the worst of the pandemic are now finding themselves still struggling to come back and, in many cases, having to make the hard decision to close.
We do not make this decision lightly. In the last 9 months, we have taken on the challenge of not just maintaining the business but also had the courage to allow ourselves to re-envision what we want the wellness industry to be — both for teachers and for students. To that goal we moved towards a democratically-run cooperative model committed to at least a 50% BIPOC leadership. Our teachers were paid a fair wage and our member-owners received equal pay for their hours of work. We instituted a sliding scale structure for both memberships and drop-ins for our students, trying to address some of the accessibility issues we so often see in yoga studios.
Unfortunately, after careful consideration of our financial options and with dwindling student attendance, we can no longer continue.
Bread and Yoga opened in Inwood in 2009 then in Harlem in 2019. We have A LOT of fantastic memories over the years. None of which would have been possible without YOU and your unwavering support. We truly hope we were a source of positive impact in your life and the life of our community.
A huge THANK YOU to the many teachers that have worked with us over the years. The students came for you and to experience the care and love you shared in each class. We could not have thrived all these years if it wasn’t for you.
To the many Karmis that worked behind the front desk and more recently behind zoom screens — THANK YOU! You were the face of the studio and usually the first to interact with students. We appreciate your attention and kindness to our students and your contribution to the running of the studios.
A special thanks must go to the co-op members who worked tirelessly the last 9 months to keep the studio going. Your commitment and loyalty did not go unnoticed.

This decision is new and we are still processing it but wanted to share it with you all as soon as we could. Feel free to email us but please understand we are a very small team. We appreciate your patience as we might not be able to respond right away.
We would love it if you could share your appreciation for the studio and for the teachers. Feel free to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or post on our social media feeds.
In solidarity and with deep gratitude,
Marcela, Sarah, Paula, Michelle, Halima, Nancy and Carolina
