Born in Pennsylvania in 1912, Bayard Rustin is most well known for his activism for gay and civil rights.Though he was an openly gay man in his private life, publically he choose to keep his preference quiet as being a homosexual was considered a criminal offense in the U.S until 2003. As such, his role as chief organizer of the March on Washington in 1963 was largely behind the scenes. Martin Luther King Jr. recruited Rustin as his advisor because previously, Rustin traveled to India to learn about nonviolent resistance directly from the leaders within Gandhi's movement. Later in life, Rustin described one pivotal moment that fueled him to continue to fight for civil rights: As he boarded a bus and headed toward the back, a young white child reached out to touch his necktie. Her mother scolded her for ever touching a black person and threw racial slurs his way. Rather than accepting the racism as normal, the child’s innocence of race relations inspired him to no longer hide his duality: gay and black. Attaching shame to his truths would only perpetuate the prejudice meant to keep him and his community underfoot. Thus, Rustin sat at the front of the bus. Posthumously, Rustin was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama.⁠

🔥HAVE YOU REGISTERED FOR THIS?!?!? Don't miss out! "Ginga Flow- Fundamentals, a hybrid workshop that incorporates the moves of Capoeira, a Brazilian martial arts & yoga. Capoeira, developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil, was originally created as a type of ritual dance that was believed to provide a person to a link to the afterlife and channel their ancestors into their dance. However, it eventually evolved as a method of survival as they disguise their forms of fighting into this dance as a tool for escaped slaves to go against armed and mounted colonial agents as they fought to regain their freedom. Music is integral to capoeira as it set the tone & style of the game as well as relays the memories of resistance to historical oppression. ⁠

During this workshop, we will learn to ginga, the fundamental movement of capoeira in which you flow from high lunge to goddess squat to high lunge to form a rhythmic fighting stance to prepare the body for a variety of movements such as kicks, escapes, feints, attacks & defense. So join June Li Lo (@juneliloyoga) in this one-hour workshop as we start slow with a meditative warm-up, combining yoga & martial movements, to a sequence of choreographed movements set to a playlist of Brazilian & capoeira music to honor those who fought against historical oppression. ⁠Link in bio to signup!⁠🔥⁠
