Music, is a little like the sun, a heart without borders

The night was filled with messages of peaceand efforts to build bridges and create harmony were in full swing. That night the general assembly hall of the United Nations was transformed into a beaming concert hall.

Every time I hear Stevie Wonder sing I realize why his last name is “wonder”. He has this amazing talent to pull you into his world with his sweet melodies of optimism and hope, with his voice of tenderness, happiness and love. At one point in the evening he said that he felt blessed to be blind. At first I thought I might not have heard right. But yes, that’s what he said. I couldn’t possibly imagine, how someone could say such a thing. He continued and explained that because of his blindness he has been able to meet every human being, every man, woman and child in his life with his heart. Fascinating, instead of meeting people with the judgmental eye, he was able to listen deeply and meet people from a place of openness, acceptance, kindness and warmth. Just imagine for a moment how that might feel.

I love music, and always have. Music is such a big part of my journey and I couldn’t imagine a world without it. Music is a little like the sun, a heart without borders. The sun shines for everyone and music simply plays for us all. No exceptions, no questions asked. It knows no outer limits, it merges with everyone and everything, everywhere. It has the incredible power to lift you up, to bridge worlds, to make you happy, when there is nothing to be happy about. It has a way of sneaking into your heart and give you a sense of warmth and light just when you thought that life was unbearable. It can inspire you, it can energize you to work out or motivate you to dive deeper into your own flow in a yoga practice. Music can inspire, or it can calm your senses and transform a hectic world into a sanctuary of bliss and peace.

When life asks you to surrender, and your existence feels empty it can be difficult to find your way out of this restless jungle. Today, I invite you to take out your favorite song and dance. Let not fear, anxiety and doubt take over. It is fear that keeps you from experiencing life fully. It is anxiety that lets you remain awake at night worrying about what has not even happened yet and may never even arrive. It is doubt that creeps in just when you wanted to take a big leap of faith and follow your dreams. Your mind will want to follow the negativity. But again, I encourage you to bring your focus on the small things you love in life, even if it’s just chocolate, and the journey just might lead you to your true dharma, your purpose in life.

I invite you to forget about the past, forget about the future, just for a moment. Let the vast ocean of music, its sweet melodies and unique rhythms embrace you warmly, let the sweet melodies sink in deeply, let the sound of presence show you that you are so much more than this body or this mind. Start listening to your own song and simply linger in the now for now and let the music lead you to your own heart without borders.
